Cryotherapy Systems, Tissue Ablation, Cardiac
Definition : Tissue ablation cryotherapy systems designed to ablate (i.e., produce a therapeutic lesion) regions of endocardial tissue that give rise to or support cardiac arrhythmia. These systems typically consist of a central computerized unit (i.e., a console) that provides the coolant (usually liquid nitrous oxide) from an integral tank; the console also includes electronic and mechanical components to perform and control the ablation during the catheterization procedure using dedicated software. Several detachable guiding and cryoablation catheters that may include balloon and single-point cryoablation catheters are also components of the system. Cardiac tissue ablation cryotherapy systems can be used under fluoroscopic guidance; they are mainly intended for patients suffering from drug refractory paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
