Definition : Infusion pump system software designed for controlling and programming infusion systems and their associated infusion pumps and/or to reduce programming errors (i.e., dose error reduction systems, also known as DERS) during the administration of medications. The software is intended to facilitate control and programming and to improve the safety of infusion procedures by warning users of incorrect medication orders, calculation errors, and misses in programming. The software only works with only one or a few models of infusion pumps, usually from the same manufacturer. Some software packages include automated programming and data logging. Some can perform a variety of algorithms to facilitate the analysis of the information related to the drug to be administered by using drug dose libraries and standard limits for a facility's medications, electrolytes, and other infusates. Control/programming software for infusion pump systems typically includes interfaces to pharmacy, electronic documentation, and/or other hospital information systems; they are used in areas of healthcare facilities where the simultaneous use of several infusion pumps is frequent.
