Tubes, Colon, Colostomy/Cecostomy

Definition : Colon tubes designed for percutaneous insertion through the abdominal wall into the colon (frequently into the cecum) after performing a surgical colostomy or cecostomy. These devices typically consist of a single-lumen plastic (e.g., silicon) tube that is inserted through the abdominal wall into the cecum, flushed with saline solution, and capped. Typically, irrigation with a phosphate enema solution that is passed through the tube into the colon followed by a saline solution (i.e., antegrade enema) is performed three to four times a week. The initial tube is usually substituted about two months after the procedure by a lower-profile cecostomy tube that sits on the surface of the skin; the new tube is hooked up to bags of enema and saline solution during the periodic irrigations. Cecostomy/colostomy tubes are used mainly for treatment of children neurologically impaired by spina bifida, imperforate anus, or a spinal cord injury.
