Software, Automation System, Operating Room
Definition : Automation system software designed to control a system that performs a specialized surgical procedure either following a pre-established program with minimal human intervention, through a user interface, or a combination of both (i.e., an operating room automation system). This software usually interacts with hardware needed to perform the surgical procedure, such as a user interface, surgical and ancillary devices, and video systems that share the same information protocol. Operating room automation system software is intended to work only with one or a few models of automation systems and related devices, usually supplied by the same manufacturer and/or configured according particular healthcare facility requirements. The system may also facilitate the processing and/or sending of data from the automation system to and from picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) and/or other hospital information systems. The software is not usually available separate from the digitization system but may be updated (i.e., through the release of modified versions) during the life of the equipment. Operating room automation system software is intended to improve the ergonomics, safety, and efficiency of surgical procedures, particularly during minimally invasive surgery; software intended for a variety of particular surgical procedures is available.
