Mediastinoscopes

Definition : Endoscopes designed for percutaneous insertion in the jugular notch of the sternum (the notch on the upper border of the sternum between the clavicular notches) for visual examination, biopsy, and treatment of lesions of the tissues and organs in the cavity between the lungs (i.e., mediastinum), including the heart and its large vessels. Mediastinoscopes usually consist of a rigid outer sheath, a lighting system, and a working channel for catheters and operative devices.
