Software, Workstation Management, Stereotactic Surgery
Definition : Software designed to operate stereotactic surgery workstations, control/monitor a limited number of their functions, and/or process data and images obtained during the surgical planning or performance. This software usually interacts with the surgical system and devices used during the procedure, such as image recorders, instrument tracking and navigation systems, printers, and displays; it may also perform a variety of algorithms to facilitate an accurate planning and performance of the surgical procedure. Stereotactic surgery workstation management software is intended to work only with one or a few models of stereotactic workstations and related, devices usually supplied by the same manufacturer. This also facilitates the processing and/or sending of data from the workstation to and from picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) and/or other hospital information systems. The software is not usually available separate from the workstation but may be updated (i.e., through the release of modified versions) during the life of the equipment. Dedicated stereotactic surgery workstation software intended for a variety of procedures (e.g., neurologic, orthopedic) performed using image-guided, imageless, or frame-guided surgical systems is also available.
