Definition : Molecular assay reagents intended to identify mutations in the hemoglobin, alpha 1 (HBA1) gene, located at chromosome 16p13.3, which is involved in the transport of oxygen from the lung to the peripheral tissues. Mutations at this locus have been identified in patients with methemoglobinemia, hemoglobinopathy H (alpha) types, erythrema alpha, thalassemia alpha, and Heinz body anemia alpha.
