Prostheses, Lower Limb, Foot, Partial

Definition : Lower limb prostheses designed for partial functional and/or cosmetic replacement of the front part of a missing foot. These prostheses typically consist of external devices (some may include totally or partially implantable components) that resemble the lost part of a natural foot and are made of metal (e.g., cobalt-chromium alloys), hard plastics (e.g., polyethylene), carbon fibers, or a combination of materials. Partial foot prostheses that use several techniques and for different purposes are available, including prostheses with shoe inserts and longitudinal arches, patella tendon bearing prostheses (clamshell prostheses that load the patella tendon), and molded sockets of either ankle or tibial tubercle height. The prostheses are used mainly in patients who suffered amputations due to illness (e.g., diabetes) and traumatic accidents and, less frequently, in patients who have congenital abnormalities.
