Definition : Aspirators designed to evacuate gas, liquid, tissue and/or other debris from a wound by means of vacuum suction. These devices usually consist of a powered (or less frequently) manual vacuum pump with a low flow rate; suction tubes; a regulator and gauge; one or more collection canisters; and plastic tubes connecting the components to each other. They may include overflow protection and/or a bacteria filter. The aspirators may be portable or mobile, line- or battery-powered. The pumps may use the thematic technique or they may provide either a continuous or intermittent suction. Wound aspirators are intended to promote wound healing and they are mainly used when suction from a central vacuum system is not available or appropriate.
