Refrigerators, Laboratory, Lead-Lined

Definition : Laboratory refrigerators with a lead liner designed for temporary storage of low- or medium-level radioactive products (e.g., radiopharmaceuticals, tagged biological materials) that require refrigeration, typically at temperatures between 1 and 10 degrees Celsius (34 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit). These refrigerators typically consist of a chamber made with a corrosion-resistant (typically stainless steel) interior, minimizing the risk of adulteration, contamination, and/or corrosion of contents; a thin (typically 3 to 6 mm [0.125 to 0.25 inch]) lead liner, a key-locked door, and internal shelving appropriate for storage, easy location, and handling of radioactive products; a compressor, condenser, evaporator, tubing, sensors, and controls for dependable long-term storage following radioactive laboratory product storage standards. Cooling elements are frequently placed inside the lead shielding to avoid heating problems. Lead-lined laboratory refrigerators are usually available in small undercounter or tabletop configurations. High-energy radioisotopes must be stored in lead-lined safes with a thicker (e.g., 51 mm [2 inches]) lead liner than in other refrigerators.
