Computers, Handheld

Definition : Computers designed as a single handheld unit (i.e., palmtop) that integrates the components needed for operation by an individual, including storage, retrieval, and the capacity to process digital data, following the instructions of one or more programs stored internally, typically in a read-only memory (ROM) chip or added later in the device's random access memory (RAM). These computers typically consist of a small unit including a relatively simple microprocessor, ROM and RAM memories, an LCD display, operating buttons, input-output ports, and a battery; some devices include a small keyboard and/or a touchscreen. Basic handheld computers act as an electronic organizer known as a PDA (personal digital assistant), capable of sharing and synchronizing information with a personal computer. Dedicated handheld computers can be connected to the Internet, run multimedia software, and act as global positioning systems; handheld computers are frequently combined with cell phones, multimedia players, and other communication devices.
