Definition : Serology reagents intended to detect antibodies to species of the typhus group of Rickettsia (including R. typhi and R. prowazekii), a genus of gram-negative bacteria of the family Rickettsiaceae. These bacteria are an etiologic agent of epidemic typhus, usually transmitted through fleas and lice from rats and other mammals; they may also cause recrudescent (latent) typhus.
