Microspheres, Embolization, Uterine Artery
Definition : Embolization microspheres designed for occlusion (embolotherapy) of the uterine arteries. The devices are typically non-resorbable elastic microspheres with a hydrophilic surface; they are manufactured using acrylic polymers covered with a gelatin. The microspheres are available in diameters from 40 to 1,200 microns either in sterile vials or pre-filled syringes in a saline solution. They are usually administered using a syringe through a catheter that is introduced in the femoral artery and advanced into the uterine arteries in a fluoroscopic guided procedure. Uterine artery embolization microspheres are used for several procedures such as arteriovenous malformations, hypervascular tumors, and ectopic pregnancy. Microspheres intended for uterine fibroid embolization should be of 500 microns or greater.
