Wheelchairs, Powered, Climbing/Lifting
Definition : Powered wheelchairs with the capability of climbing curbs and stairs and/or allow the occupant to operate the wheelchair while lifted in a balanced seated position to the eye-level of a standing person. They may have additional capabilities such as displacement on uneven surfaces (e.g., gravel, sand, grass) and operation under remote control when the occupant is not sitting on the wheelchair. These wheelchairs typically consist of a seating structure including a seat, a backrest, armrests, footrests, and other components and/or accessories; a power system including a motor, a battery, and brakes; a computerized unit for easy and reliable operation of the wheelchair; and a control unit operated by the occupant. Climbing/lifting powered wheelchairs (as typical for powered wheelchairs) are customized for each patient needs; they are usually appropriate for indoor and outdoor use.
