Prostheses, Cardiac Ventricle

Definition : Prostheses designed to assist and/or substitute for one ventricle of a damaged or weakened heart in order to pump blood; they may substitute for either the left ventricle or, less frequently, the right ventricle. These devices typically consist of an implantable metallic and plastic mechanism that includes one pump, which works as an artificial ventricle and pushes the blood from the inlet to the outlet and then through the circulatory system.
