Specula, Pharyngeal

Definition : Specula designed to expand the distal opening of the oral cavity for examination and/or treatment of the pharynx. These specula typically consist of a metallic instrument comprising a hollow cylinder and a solid handle that elevates the palate and depresses the tongue at the same time. Pharyngeal specula may be of many different sizes and shapes; they are usually stainless steel and reusable.
