Definition : Biopsy needles designed for percutaneous transabdominal puncture of the uterus to obtain samples of amniotic fluid. These devices typically consist of 20- or 22-gauge needles of 90 to 150 mm (3-1/2 to 6 inches) in length, with appropriate tips to minimize damage to the uterus and/or fetus. The needles are usually attached to external devices (e.g., syringes) for external aspiration of the amniotic fluid; some needles include depth marks to facilitate accurate insertion and positioning.
