Definition : Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum, tumor tissue extracts) to determine one or more of the cathepsin aspartate proteinases (i.e., cathepsin B, D, H, L) , a group of enzymes secreted by some specific cells (e.g., mucous neck cells, pyloric gland cells). Cathepsins are associated with processes of tumor growth, revascularization, and metastasis. They are used in the prognostic and monitoring of several types of malignancies, including breast, lung, colorectal, brain, and head and neck cancers.
