Electrodes, Neurologic

Definition : Electrodes designed to transmit or receive bioelectric signals from the nervous system and/or to apply electrical stimuli to the system. These electrodes are available in a variety of configurations including scalp electrodes (also known as skin or superficial electrodes), transcutaneous electrodes (e.g., transdermal needles), and implantable electrodes. Dedicated neurology electrodes are used for a variety of procedures, such as to detect and transmit bioelectric signals from the central nervous system, including the measurement recording, and/or monitoring of the brain function (i.e., electroencephalography), to deliver periodic electric stimuli to the brain (e.g., to alleviate tremors and/or seizures), to provide brain shock (i.e., electroconvulsive therapy), and to detect the brain and central nervous system response to several types of stimuli (i.e., evoked potential measurement). Electrodes capable of performing several of these tasks are also available.

Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems Inc

Company Type: Parent

BrainGate's mission is to further the advancement of this life-changing technology to promote wider adoption to help impaired individuals communicate and interact with society. For instance, the Cyberkenetics BrainGate Neural Interface is currently the subject of a pilot clinical trial being conducted under an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) from the FDA. The system is designed to restore functionality for a limited, immobile group of severely motor-impaired individuals. It is expected that people using the BrainGate System will employ a personal computer as the gateway to a range of self-directed activities. These activities may extend beyond typical computer functions (e.g., communication) to include the control of objects in the environment such as a telephone, a television and lights.

NeuMed Inc

Company Type: Parent

In 1984 an idea was born: empower medical professionals with the ability to quickly and easily perform non-invasive nerve conduction tests at the point of care (POC). That objective went from concept to reality through a collaborative effort between NeuMed and the University of Iowa. Decades later, NeuMed is proud of this pioneering accomplishment as well as the commitment to design excellence and innovation. From our strong understanding of neurodiagnostic science, electrical engineering, embedded software systems, and information technology (IT) NeuMed has been recognized for its accuracy, reliability, and efficacy by a multitude of prestigious institutions. The traditional (or conventional) nerve conduction methodology is simply the most trusted in medicine and has always been the foundation of NeuMed's NCS-Monitors. Our technology is so accurate and reliable that it is used globally by endocrinologists, hand surgeons, internal medicine, neurologists, orthopaedists, physiatrists, podiatric surgeons, primary care physicians, occupational medicine clinics, and rheumatologists.
