Definition : Reagents used for artificial coloration of the constituent parts of the cells and the intercellular material. They usually consist of natural or artificial dyes. Most cytology and histology stains are used for visual or microscopic differentiation between parts of the cell (e.g., nucleus, cytoplasm) and/or to differentiate between the different types of cells and tissues.
