Echoencephalographs

Definition : Graphic recorders used for recording the ultrasonic waves directed through the head and reflected backwards (i.e. echoed). These recorders use a transducer that transmits and receives the ultrasonic waves, reproducing the sound characteristics in an graph (echocardiogram). They are used for recording the boundaries on each side and the midline structures of the skull and the presence of a mass lesion (e.g. brain tumor, subdural hematoma).
