Definition : Microbiology reagents intended to identify species of Yersinia, a genus of intracellular, ovoid-shaped bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae. Yersinia bacteria species that are pathologic to humans include Y. pestis, which causes bubonic plague; Y. enterocolitica, which causes acute gastroenteritis and mesenteric lymphadenitis; and Y. pseudotuberculosis, which causes mesenteric lymphadenitis without gastroenteritis.
