Lasers, Ho:YAG, Angioplasty

Definition : Ho:YAG lasers designed to deliver their energy into the vessels to eliminate areas of narrowing (i.e., angioplasty). These lasers consist of a pulsed Ho:YAG laser generator and a delivery system including optical fibers and a catheter, that emits laser-energy from its distal tip. Angioplasty Ho:YAG lasers are mostly used in laser assisted angioplasty of totally occluded coronary arteries, especially in the presence of thrombus; some are also used in the treatment of total occlusions in the peripheral vessels.

Entry Terms : "Angioplasty Systems, Laser" , "Laser Angioplasty Systems" , "Generators, Lesion, Radiofrequency" , "Direct Ablation Angioplasty Systems"

Transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) is performed with a low powered Holmium:YAG laser that delivers precise laser energy directly to the target area(s) of the heart muscle. When performed as a sole therapy, it is done through a small incision between the ribs (thoracotomy) with the patient under general anesthesia. TMR can also be performed as a complement to bypass surgery in patients that have areas of ischemic heart disease that cannot be bypassed. The precise laser therapy is used to create small channels into the heart chamber which stimulate the heart muscle to create new blood vessels
