Transformers, Isolation

Definition : Transformers designed to isolate the secondary winding from the primary winding in such a way that neither of the secondary terminals is grounded. Typically the ratio of transformation is one to one, so the voltage in the secondary winding is the same as in the primary. Most of these transformers include electrostatic shields between windings. Isolation transformers are used to reduce the leakage currents of a particular device to levels low enough (e.g., 50 microampere) to eliminate microshock hazards, thus ensuring the safety of the devices. These transformers are sometimes included as an integral part of electric and electronic medical equipment.
