Definition : Graphic recorders used for recording the extremely weak magnetic fields generated due to the electric activity of the brain. Arrays of superconducting magnetic field-sensing coils connected to very sensitive magnetic-flux sensors (e.g., superconducting quantum interference devices known as SQUIDS) detect and transmit the signals to a multichannel recording system, which in turn reproduces their characteristics in an amplitude versus time graph (a magnetoencephalogram). These recorders must be used in shielded rooms to prevent interference from external electromagnetic fields. Magnetoencephalographs are used to map the electric current activity in the brain.
