Surgical Hand-Access Ports

Definition : Disposable surgical ports used as an adjunct to minimally invasive abdominal surgery (i.e., laparoscopic procedures), while preserving peritoneum isolation and pneumoperitoneum. These ports are designed to permit the surgeon to insert one hand into the abdominal cavity (e.g., using a pneumatic sleeve) through an incision smaller than normally required for traditional open laparotomy. Surgical hand-access ports usually include an adhesive attachment to the skin to keep isolation, and other components (e.g., retractors, blood/fluid absorbing materials). In this scenario, the port acts as a seal that allows the surgeon to manually manipulate organs or instrumentation from within the abdominal cavity.
