Lasers, Excimer, Dental

Definition : Excited dimer (i.e., excimer) gas lasers designed for use in dental procedures. The most commonly used excimer lasers are rare gas monohalides (e.g., argon fluoride, xenon chloride); the emission wavelength is typically in the ultraviolet range and depends on the monohalide used (e.g., 193 nm for ArF, 308 nm for Xe Cl). These lasers may be operated in pulsed and Q-switched modes. Dental excimer lasers are used mainly to excise or vaporize hard tissue, usually in procedures involving dental enamel and dentin.
