Definition : Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning systems that allow imaging of all areas of the body, and whose magnetic fields usually range from 0.5 to 1.5 Tesla. The patient is accommodated in a long bore, typically 55 to 60 cm (22 to 24 inches) in diameter and 1.5 to 2.0 m (5.0 to 6.5 feet) long. Full-body MRI systems also include "open" or "accessible" units with a cylindrical bore that is 75 cm (30 in) or greater in diameter or a rectangular bore that is 100 cm (40 in) or wider; these units may also incorporate a design with open sides.
