Oximeters, Cerebral
Definition : Oximeters that non-invasively measure the regional oxygen saturation in the deep intracranial microvasculature of the brain, which primarily represents cerebral venous saturation (SvO2). The technique used is similar to the filter photometer technique used in pulse oximeters, except that it does not require an arterial pulse. These oximeters include a light source, lens, a filter array (usually of several wavelengths in the near infrared spectrum), fiberoptic cables, a head probe, light sensors and a computer unit that process the data and reduce them to relative oxygen concentrations. Cerebral oximeters are used to monitor adults at risk of cerebral hypoxemia or ischemia in the operating room, intensive care and emergency units, and recovery rooms
