Monitors, Bedside, Uterine Activity
Definition : Bedside monitors designed to measure and display the frequency and intensity of uterus contractions (i.e., uterine activity). External monitors typically use a sensor to detect the changes in the abdomen as the uterus contracts, and a computerized unit to process and display the uterine activity; some devices include ultrasonic transducers to make possible fetal and maternal heart rate monitoring. Intrauterine monitors measure pressure changes through a catheter placed transcervically to determine the frequency and duration of uterine contractions. External uterine activity monitors are used at home, in physician's offices and sometimes in hospitals before childbirth (antepartum); internal devices are used during labor (intrapartum).
