Definition : Audio recorders designed to store sound information in digital format in an external optical disk memory. These recorders usually consist of an electromechanical device that includes an integral microphone and/or external jacks to attach microphones or other sound sources; an analog/digital converter; data processors; controls; and a media card slot for use with optical compact disk memory. The audio information may be recorded using a variety of formats, including a very common format known as MP3. Compact disk recorders usually have playing capabilities that include a digital/analog converter and have both integral amplifiers and speakers or they provide output to sound reproduction systems. The audio recorders are available in tabletop, rack mounted, car mounted, and portable versions.
