Catheter Introducers, Vascular

Definition : Catheter introducers designed for use in the percutaneous introduction of catheters into the vasculature. These introducers consist of an assembly of devices that may include some or all of the following components: a needle or stylet, a dilator, a guidewire, and a sheath. Usually all components are taken out after the insertion into the vasculature leaving only the sheath for catheter introduction through it. Some introducers include peel-away sheaths for easy discard after the catheter is in place; other sheaths may stay dwelling in the vessel for a pre-established maximum time. Vascular catheter introducers frequently include a hemostasis valve to prevent entry of air into the circulation as well as blood or fluid loss around the indwelling catheter when it is removed. Dedicated catheter introducers are available for the insertion of peripheral, midline, and/or central venous (including the pulmonary vasculature) catheters; some introducers provide needlestick protection. Dedicated introducers including characteristics such as echogenic needles that permit ultrasound guidance during insertion are also available. Procedure kits and/or trays including all necessary devices and supplies needed for intravenous catheterization are also available.
