Drill Bits, Surgical, Craniotomy, Slot

Definition : Surgical bone drill bits designed to perforate the cranium when held and revolved by a rotary device (e.g., a surgical handpiece) that are capable of cutting straight down into the cranium and then move laterally to make slots. These devices typically consist of a cylindrical shank of steel or other hard metal with a uniform cross-section. They include a working end with fluted cutting edges that include at least a pair of opposite cutting teeth that allow cutting slots in the skull, and a notched or elongated proximal end to fit into the rotary device. Slot craniotomy drill bits are used mainly to cut cranium flaps that are usually replaced after intracranial surgery.
