Procedure Kit/Trays, Implant Delivery, Cardiac Valve, Transcatheter

Definition : Prepackaged collections of the necessary devices and supplies (either custom or standard) needed for transcatheter delivery of implantable valves to appropriate locations in the heart. Items in these kits usually include (1) the implantable endoprostheses (i.e., a biological or artificial valve), (2) catheters that include a compliant section near the distal end for valve delivery and deployment, and (3) balloons to facilitate implant deployment. The valve is usually introduced in the vasculature through a percutaneous (femoral, subclavian) or direct transaortic (between two ribs) catheter; the kit may include also an expandable introducers sheath. When the valve reaches the right location the balloons are inflated placing the valve in place; then the catheter is retracted. The entire procedure is performed using fluoroscopic guidance for insertion to check for proper functioning of the valve. Cardiac valve delivery kits include catheters and balloons in a variety of sizes to fit patient needs, kits used to implant particular cardiac valves (e.g., aortic, pulmonary) are also available.
