Retractors, Surgical, Joint Tissue, Shoulder

Definition : Surgical retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back tissues other than bone (e.g., periosteal tissue) in the shoulder joint, exposing and providing access to other tissues, bones, or structures of the joint during orthopedic surgery procedures. These retractors are typically manual, handheld instruments available in a variety of shapes and sizes and are selected according to the tissue of the shoulder articulation that is retracted and/or the anatomical structure to be exposed. Shoulder joint tissue retractors are used in many orthopedic reconstructive procedures and/or after trauma. Dedicated retractors with a curved shaft and a fork-like distal blade are available for use in procedures that require a separation of tissue from the glenoid rim.
