Orthopedic Rod Implants, Scoliosis, Mechanical Distraction

Definition : Orthopedic implants designed as a solid mechanically expandable rod that are surgically inserted to reshape spinal vertebrae that have lateral angular deformation from the normal vertical line (i.e., scoliosis). These implants are straight metal (e.g., stainless steel, titanium) rods that are surgically inserted and fixed along the spine to hold the vertebrae and avoid further deviation; the rods permit elongation along the axis (i.e., perform mechanical distraction of the vertebrae) during further surgical procedures after implantation (e.g., in six-month intervals). One or two mechanical distraction rods are usually implanted in patients, mainly children, diagnosed with scoliosis.
