Orthoses, Upper Limb, Finger, Inter-Phalangeal Joint, Therapeutic

Definition : Inter-phalangeal (IP) joint orthoses designed for external modification of the structural and/or functional characteristics of the fingers. These devices control and restrict movement of the IP joints during therapeutic treatments. These orthoses may consist of a variety of devices, typically including a semi-rigid, lightweight, plastic structure with aluminum stays and closure straps or sleeves that permit controlled flexion and/or extension of both (proximal and distal) IP joints. IP joint orthoses (e.g., splints) are used to prevent further development of finger deformities and/or for rehabilitation usually after corrective surgery. Dedicated orthoses intended to keep the proximal and distal IP joints in controlled flexion and extension, respectively (e.g., swan-neck splints), are also available.
