Definition : Shoe modifier foot gait orthoses designed as a permanent modification of a shoe by attaching a spring-loaded device to the sole. These orthoses typically consist of a metallic wire spring that may be interchangeable among several pairs of shoes. Spring-loaded shoe modifiers are mainly used to compensate for weak (i.e., flaccid or paralyzed) equinus in patients with muscular dystrophy, typically after cerebrovascular accidents, and/or caused by other diseases.
