Adhesives, Tissue, Synthetic, Cyanoacrylate

Definition : Synthetic tissue adhesive compounds that include a cyanocrylate (e.g., N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate) as the active component. Cyanoacrylates solidify (i.e., polymerize) in contact with weak bases, such as water and blood. These compounds (also known as cyanocrylate glue) are frequently mixed before application with lipiodol to slow the rate of polymerization and to allow visualization using fluoroscopy. Cyanocrylate tissue adhesives are mainly used for hemostasis, wound closure, and fistula repair. They are also used during endoscopic procedures for gastric or esophageal varices.
