Definition : Thick layers of materials designed to apply pressure, heat or cold, or medication to a specific body surface. Compresses generally consist of soft pads made of several layers of cotton cloth, linen cloth or gauze. Compresses are mainly used to reduce pain, joint stiffness and muscle spasms, reduce skin inflammation, or stop bleeding in a wound. Dedicated compresses designed to apply cold, moist heat or medications are also available.
