Valves, Hydrocephalic

Definition : Valves that usually connect an intracranial catheter to another catheter that drains the cerebrospinal fluid in the peritoneum or the left atrium of the heart. The whole combination of the intracranial catheter, the peritoneal or atrial cardiac catheter, and the valve is known as a ventriculoperitoneal or ventriculoatrial shunt, respectively. The shunt may include also a reservoir.
