Definition : Respiratory tract endoscopes designed to view the interior of the respiratory tract, particularly the trachea and the bronchi of the lungs for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes. These endoscopes usually consist of an outer sheath, a lighting system, and a working channel for catheters and operative devices; these endoscopes may be flexible or rigid. Therapeutic bronchoscopes (with operating channels) may be used to perform biopsies and laser surgery, remove foreign objects, aspirate fluids, and administer diagnostic agents or therapy using devices such as lasers, electrosurgical units, or surgical instruments. These endoscopes may be flexible or rigid.
