Definition : Thermometers in the form of slender, hollow tubes made of glass, that are sealed at the top and bottom with a bulb at the base filled with mercury. When heat raises the temperature of the bulb, the mercury expands and fills the tube proportionally. The height of the mercury column, as measured on a graduated scale on the glass, indicates the temperature.
