Definition : Instruments used to excite (stimulate) functional activities by generating and applying an external agent (e.g., electrical or ultrasonic stimulus). Most stimulators allow for control of the specific duration, intensity, and frequency of the applied stimulus. Stimulators are used for diagnostic, monitoring, functional, therapeutic, experimental, or other purposes, excluding tissue ablation.
