Resuscitators, Cardiac

Definition : Resuscitators designed to restore the cardiac function of a patient under cardiac arrest. These resuscitators apply mechanical compression cyclically to the cavity between the sternum and the vertebral column, compressing the sternum up to five centimeters (two inches), and forcing the heart to eject blood. Most cardiac resuscitators are pneumatically or electrically driven, but a manually operated cardiac press has also been used. Cardiac resuscitators may be used as a substitute for manual external cardiac compression to prevent fatigue of emergency personnel and to provide better consistency in the applied force and rate of compression.

Entry Terms : "Cardiac Resuscitators" , "Cardiac Assist Units" , "External Cardiac Compressors" , "Compressors, External Cardiac" , "Cardiac Massage Units" , "Cardiac Compressors"
