Polygraphs

Definition : Multichannel physiologic graphical recorders designed for the simultaneous recording of instantaneous values and/or variations of a number of different physiologic parameters (e.g., electrocardiogram; electroencephalogram; temperature, respiration, blood pressure), usually under conditions of physical or mental stress. Dedicated multichannel graphical recorders are available for recording a variety of parameters used in different types of assessments (e.g., polysomnography); the term is frequently associated with polygraphs intended to assess the truth of people's statements (i.e., lie detectors).
