Plethysmographs, Body

Definition : Plethysmographs used for determining airway resistance and thoracic gas volume. These devices include an airtight body chamber (i.e., plethysmograph chamber) and transducers that allow the recording (usually an X-Y recording) of chamber pressure verses air flow and chamber pressure vs mouth pressure to determine the airway resistance. Thoracic gas volume is determined according to Boyle's law by recording the chamber and airway pressures simultaneously with the airway open and with the airway occluded. It is also possible to determine the instantaneous flow by recording the pulmonary capillary blood flow in a plethysmograph.

Entry Terms : "Volume Plethysmographs" , "Plethysmographs, Volume" , "Pressure Plethysmographs" , "Plethysmographs, Pressure" , "Body Plethysmographs"
