Phonocardiographs

Definition : Cardiographs used for recording heart sounds at the thoracic body surface. Operation of these cardiographs is based on the fact that heart action causes low-frequency vibrations in the range of the human audible spectrum, which are transmitted through organs and tissue to the body surface. These devices typically consist of a set of microphones, an electroacoustic transducer, and a graphical recorder that reproduces the cardiac sound characteristics in the form of a diagram (i.e., a phonocardiogram). Phonocardiographs are used to assess low-frequency sounds (associated with atrial and ventricular gallops) and also relatively higher frequency sounds (associated with mitral regurgitation and ventricular septal defect). Some of these cardiographs are also capable of recording subsonic frequencies (i.e., a few Hertz below the human sound threshold) that are considered as "nonacoustic vibrations" (i.e., they also function as apexcardiographs).

Entry Terms : "Vibrophonocardiographs" , "Stethographs" , "Electrophonocardiographs" , "Electrocardiophones" , "Cardiophones"
