Definition : Mechanical tactile stimulators that apply pressure stimuli, usually to the patient's great toe (hallux). These devices typically consist of a handheld disc with protruding rods that differ in diameter (for patient discrimination of diameter) or of pressure-sensitive nylon filaments mounted on an appropriate handle (for pressure sensibility measurements). These stimulators are simple instruments typically used in the physician office for detecting peripheral neuropathy and/or the diagnosis of diabetes or leprosy.
