Monitors, Physiologic, Electroencephalography

Definition : Physiologic monitors designed for continuous measurement and display of information of the electrical activity of the brain and its associated electroencephalogram (EEG). These monitors include a central unit with electronic circuits that can process a signal from electrodes that may be placed on a patient's scalp and/or forehead; intracranial (e.g., subdural, epidural) and nasopharyngeal electrodes are sometimes used. The monitors can display the numerical values and trends of the received signals, the EEG waveform, and may perform other functions such as initiation of visual/audible alarms. Dedicated EEG monitors intended for used at the bedside, in operating rooms, and for telemetry are available; the monitors may be used as a component of a physiologic monitoring system that also include a central station and/or auxiliary displays.
